Why Add Udaipur to the Golden Triangle
Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur are, in different ways, about conquest and empire – Mughal forts, British-era monuments, Rajput palaces built as much for defence as for beauty. Udaipur was built differently. The Mewar rulers who founded it chose a site around natural lakes specifically for its calm, and the city still reads that way: white palaces reflected in still water, narrow lanes that open onto ghats instead of bazaars, evenings that are genuinely quiet rather than merely less crowded.
Practically, this changes the shape of your trip. Where Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur run on a fairly packed sightseeing schedule, Udaipur is where most travellers deliberately slow down – a boat ride instead of another fort, a rooftop dinner facing the lake instead of a full day of monuments. Ending the Golden Triangle here, rather than flying home straight from Jaipur, gives the trip an actual close instead of just a stop.
What You’ll See in Udaipur
City Palace
Rajasthan’s largest palace complex, built up over nearly 400 years by successive Mewar rulers, overlooking Lake Pichola from the city’s eastern shore. Courtyards, mirrored halls, and museum wings make this easily a half-day visit on its own.
Lake Pichola Boat Ride
The signature Udaipur experience, usually timed for sunset: a boat trip across the lake with views of the City Palace, the Lake Palace floating at its centre, and a stop at Jag Mandir, a 17th-century island palace.
Jagdish Temple
A carved stone temple dating to 1651, a short walk from the City Palace, still active for daily worship and worth visiting for the carving alone.
Saheliyon ki Bari
A small, ornamental garden built for the ladies of the royal court, with fountains, lotus pools, and marble elephants – a quieter, shorter stop that most itineraries fit in alongside the temple visit.
Local Markets and Lakeside Cafés
Udaipur’s old city is built for walking rather than driving between sights, and most travellers spend a free evening simply wandering the lanes around the lake.

October to March (Peak Season)
Comfortable temperatures across all four cities, ideal for both the fort-heavy days in Agra and Jaipur and the slower lakeside evenings in Udaipur. This is also when hotel demand is highest, so book a few weeks ahead if you’re set on a specific property.
April to June (Off-Season)
Hot across the route, especially in Jaipur and Delhi, though Udaipur’s lakes make the heat marginally more bearable than the other three cities. Workable if you keep sightseeing to mornings and evenings.
July to September (Monsoon)
Udaipur is arguably at its most beautiful during monsoon – full lakes, green hills around the city, dramatic skies – even though this isn’t peak season for the route overall. Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur see intermittent heavy rain that can disrupt outdoor sightseeing.
